Variable : 2021 Industrial Classification

Variables serve as the dimensions of nCubes, and are generally based on the questions on forms such as the census schedule. However, in the aggregate data held in the Vision of Britain system we do not store the individual responses but counts of the number of each kind of response, so variables are made up of categories, such as age groups.

This classification of "employer's business" is the most detailed available within the 2021 census Flexible Output Systems.. Most categories are the Sections in the UK Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities (UKSIC 2007), identified by letters, except that Sections R, "Arts, entertainment and recreation", S, "Other service activities", T, "Activities of households", and U, "Extraterritorial bodies", are combined (for comparison, the available 2011 data combine Sections R and S, but separately report T and U).
