WINNATS (The), a wild deep chasm, about a mile long, in Castleton parish, Derby; traversed by a mountain road to Chapel-en-le-Frith and Buxton. It is overhung by steep precipices; it was originally called Windgates; and it probably got that name from a fierce sweeping of it with high winds.
