Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Dunbny

Dunbny, an insulated rock in Cruden parish, Aberdeenshire, ½ mile S by W of the Bullers of Buchan. Pierced by a magnificent natural arch, it is thought to be the prototype of the Scrath Rock in Shirley's Campaign at Home, and is mentioned by Sir Walter Scott in his Antiquary; whilst Dr Johnson described it as 'a double protuberance of stone, open to the main sea on one side, and parted from the land by a very narrow channel on the other.' Its name (dun-buidhe) signifies the 'yellow rock,' and alludes to its being covered with guano from innumerable sea-fowl.
