Hailes, a ruined baronial fortalice in Prestonkirk parish, Haddingtonshire, on the right bank of the Tyne, 4¼ miles ENE of Haddington. A stronghold of the notorious Earl of Bothwell, it was the first place whither he brought Queen Mary, after seizing her at Fountainbridge (24 April 1567); afterwards it came to the Dalrymples of Hailes; and in 1835 it was partially used as a granary.—Ord.
