Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Hartrigge

Hartrigge, a mansion in Jedburgh parish, Roxburghshire, 7 furlongs NE of the town. Approached by a fine avenue, it is a Scottish Baronial edifice, formed in 1854 by David Bryce out of an older and plainer house for John, Lord Campbell (1781-1861), Chancellor of England, who made it his home for several years. Its present possessor, his son, William Frederick Campbell, second Baron Stratheden and Campbell since 1836 and 1841 (b. 1824; suc. 1860-61), holds 1600 acres in the shire, valued at £2278 per annum. Hartrigge, besides, was the death-place of two Scotch judges - William Penney, Lord Kinloch (1801-72), and Robert Macfarlane, Lord Ormidale (1802-80).—Ord. Sur., sh. 17, 1864.
