Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Hillside

Hillside, a village and a quoad sacra parish in Montrose parish, Forfarshire. The village stands on sloping ground, ½ mile NNE of Dubton Junction, and 2¾ miles NNW of Montrose town, under which it has a post office. Straggling over a considerable area, it contains a number of fine villas, and is a summer retreat of families from Montrose. The parish, constituted in 1872, is in the presbytery of Brechin and synod of Angus and Mearns; its minister's stipend is £120. The church was built in 1869 at a cost of £1000. Pop. of village (1871) 326, (1881) 314; of q. s. parish (1871) 1352, (1881) 1480.—Ord. Sur., sh. 57, 1868.
