Muirhouse, a mansion in Cramond parish, Edinburghshire, on the shore of the Firth of Forth, 1½ mile NNE of Davidson's Mains and 4½ miles WNW of Edinburgh. Only two round towers remain of a previous mansion (circa 1670); and the present house is a picturesque Tudor edifice of about 1830, with a square battlemented tower and beautiful well-wooded grounds. Its drawingroom is adorned with several frescoes by Zephaniah Bell. Purchased by his ancestor in 1776, the estate belongs now to Thomas Davidson, Esq., F.R.S., F.L.S., F.G.S. (b. 1817; suc. 1865), who holds 412 acres in the shire, valued at £1216 per annum.—Ord. Sur., sh. 32, 1857. See John Small's Castles and Mansions of the Lothians (Edinb. 1883).
