Shute, par. and vil., Devon - par., 2738 ac., pop. 579; vil., on river Axe, 3 miles SW. of Axminster; P.O.; has remains of an ancient mansion, formerly a seat of the Bonvilles and the Poles. Shute House, the present mansion, was built in 1787. Shute Hill is crowned with an ancient beacon-house, and commands fine views.
