Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Vine, The

Vine, The, seat, Basingstoke par., Hants, 3 miles N. of Basingstoke; was built by Lord Sandys in 1550, and passed to the Chutes in 1654; is said to derive its name from standing on the spot where the Romans first grew the vine in England.
