Auchtermuchty, par., royal burgh, and market town, NW. Fifeshire, 4¼ miles NW. of Ladybank junction by rail -- par., 3530 ac., pop. 2322; town, pop. 1673; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Monday. It has spinning-mills, bleaching works, &c., and was the birthplace of John Glass (1695-1773), the founder of the religious sect called the Glassites.
