Cheviot Hills, mountain range, extending about 35 miles along the border of England and Scotland, and reaching in Cheviot Hill, 6 miles SW. of Wooler, an alt. of 2676 ft. The next highest peaks are -- Cairn Hill, 2545 ft.; Hedgehope Hill, 2348; Cushat Law, 2020; Carter Fell, 1815; Peel Fell, 1975; and Bloodybush Edge, 2001. The hills are generally conical in shape; the prevailing rock is porphyritic trap; the surface is for the most part smooth and covered with a rich sward, affording excellent pasturage, on which the famous breed of sheep called Cheviots is reared. Several streams, such as the Coquet, Kale, Liddel, and Tyne, rise in the pastoral recesses of the hills.
