Hammersmith, parl bor. and par., Middlesex, on river Thames, in W. of London, 2287 ac., pop. 71,939; Hammersmith returns 1 member to Parliament; it was made a parliamentary bor. in 1885. Hammersmith Suspension Bridge across the Thames was erected in 1825-27, at a cost of £80,000; it is 688 ft. long and 20 ft. wide, and was the first suspension bridge erected near London.
