Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Lochmaben

Lochmaben, parl. and royal burgh, and par. with ry. sta., near river Annan, in co. and 10 miles NE. of Dumfries - par., 10,813 ac., pop. 2816; parl. burgh, pop. 1216; royal burgh, pop. 1539; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Monday. Lochmaben is environed by lochs, of which there are around it no less than 7. On a peninsula in Castle Loch are the ruins of Lochmaben Castle, the ancestral residence of the Bruces, under whom the town was anciently one of the most important on the Border. Lochmaben has some mfrs. of stockings and shirts. It forms one of the Dumfries District of Parliamentary Burghs, which returns 1 member.
