Temple Newsam, township and seat, partly in Leeds par., but chiefly in Whitkirk par., E. div. West-Riding Yorkshire - township (partly in bor. of Leeds), 4086 ac., pop. 2661; seat, 4 miles E. of Leeds. Temple-Newsam was originally a preceptory of the Knights Templars, founded 1181, and commemorated in Ivanhoe under the name of Templestowe; it afterwards became the birthplace of Lord Darnley, husband of Mary Queen of Scots.
