Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Warkworth

Warkworth.-- seaport and market town, par., and township, Northumberland, near mouth of river Coquet, 7 miles SE. of Alnwick and 316 from London by rail-par, (including Amble), 17,455 ac., pop. 6917; township, 1129 ac., pop. 662; P.O. Market-day, Thursday. Warkworth has an old church; a castle of the Percys, now the property of the Duke of Northumberland; and the ancient hermitage of Bishop Percy's ballad. The trade of the place is chiefly carried on from Amble (1 mile SE.), where there is a considerable harbour, with pier, quays, tramways, &c.; it is principally in connection with the great coal seam at Kadcliffe. Herring fishing, salt mfr., and brick-making are also carried on.
