Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Bell Rock, or Inch Cape

Bell Rock, or Inch Cape, a reef, off E. coast of Scotland, 12 miles SE. of Arbroath, completely covered at high water. A lighthouse was built upon it by Robert Stevenson in 1807-11. It is 120 ft. high, and has revolving white and red lights visible at distance of about 14 miles. Tradition says that the Abbot of Arbroath caused a hell to he suspended here to warn sailors of the hidden danger -- a story well known through Southey's ballad of "The Inchcape Rock..
