Fishguard (or Abergwaen), parl. bor., seaport, market town, and par., N. Pembrokeshire, at mouth of river Gwaen and at head of Fishguard Bay, 13 miles N. of Haverfordwest and 268 from London -- par., 4208 ac., pop. 2009; bor., 1346 ac., pop. 1595; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Thursday. The town is small and ill-built, but the bay is one of the best natural harbours on that part of the coast. It is 1½ mile N. and S., and 3 miles E. and W.; it is free from sandbanks and shoals, is sheltered by the bold promontories of Dinas Head and Penainglbs, and is at all times easy of access. With the extension of the railway to Fishguard, the port must become one of the principal outlets of the trade to Ireland. Fishguard is one of the Pembroke Boroughs, which return 1 member to Parliament.
