Grain, Isle of (or St James), par. and vil., mid. Kent, at confluence of the rivers Thames and Medway, 14 miles E. of Rochester, 3177 ac. (103 water) and 1292 tidal water and foreshore, pop. 283; P.O.; was formerly an island, but a road now connects it with the mainland; extensive forts are placed here to guard the approach to the Medway.
