Down, near the head of Lough Strangford, 9 miles by road and 14 miles by rail E. of Belfast - par., 14,837 ac., pop. 12,161; township, 483 ac., pop. 8676; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Saturday. Newtownards has important markets. Flax-spinning is carried on; the industry of weaving and embroidering muslin has declined. There is a celebrated nursery. The town stands on the property of the Marquis of Londonderry.
