Wotton under Edge, market town and par., Gloucestershire, 4 miles S. of Dursley and 12 SW. of Stroud, 4880 ac., pop. 3349; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Friday. Wotton has long claimed to be a prescriptive incorporation, under charter of Henry III. It has a handsome church, literary institution with library and reading-room, and endowed grammar and blue-coat schools. The manufacture of woollen, once a considerable industry at Wotton, has somewhat declined. In addition to the weekly market, there are markets on the first Tuesday of every month, and fairs in March and September.
