Rothes.-- police burgh with ry. sta., Elginshire, and par., partly also in Banffshire - par., 19,816 ac., pop. 2201; burgh, near river Spey, 11 miles SE. of Elgin, pop. 1382; P.O., T.O, 2 Banks. Rothes was made a police burgh in 1884. It gives the title of earl to the family of Leslie. There are 3 distilleries in the vicinity.
