Hermitage Castle, ruin, Castleton par., S. Roxburghshire, on Hermitage Water (affluent of Liddel Water), 3 miles NW. of Steele Road sta.; was erected in the 13th century, and belonged successively to the Lords Soulis, the Douglases, and the Hepburns, and is now the property of the Duke of Buccleuch; is one of the oldest baronial buildings in Scotland, and the largest and best preserved fortalice on the Border.
