HARECASTLE, a place on the NW border of Staffordshire; near the Kidsgrove Junction station of the Crewe, Stoke, and Uttoxeter railway, 4 miles N of Newcastle-under-Lyne. The Grand Trunk or Trent and Mersey canal begins here; and a tunnel of the railway, 1,888 yards long, is in the neighbourhood.
