MAIDEN-WAY, a Roman road in Westmoreland and Cumberland. It was a branch of Watling-street; it commenced at Kirkby-Thore, in Westmoreland; and it went northward, over Cross-Fell, past Whitley Castle and Caervorran, or Magna-on-the-Wall, to Bewcastle. Some portions of it are still distinctly traceable.
