CROSSDALE, a ravine in the county of Durham, 3 miles S of the city of Durham; so deep and narrow as to be seldom penetrated by the sun's rays; and anciently so dreaded by the superstitions, as the fancied abode of evil spirits, that a cross was erected in it to expel them.
