BRISTOL PORT AND PIER RAILWAY, a railway from the port of Bristol, 5¾ miles, to the Old Channel at the mouth of the Avon. It was authorised in July 1862, and opened in March 1865. A dock, 1,400 feet long and 85 feet wide, was in course of formation at its terminus in 1869; and is for the accommodation of such large vessels as cannot readily go up the Avon to Bristol.
