ARMATHWAITE HALL, the seat of Sir Henry Vane, Bart., at the foot of Bassenthwaite water, 5½ miles ENE of Cockermouth, Cumberland. The grounds are very beautiful; and a spot adjacent to them, on the road to Hesket-Newmarket, commands one of the richest views of Bassenthwaite water and its screens.
(John Marius Wilson, Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales (1870-72))
