Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for ANCHOR-STONE

ANCHOR-STONE, a rock in the river Dart, a little S of Dittisham, Devon. It rises steeply from a depth of fully ten fathoms, and is visible at low water. It is said to have been frequented by Sir Walter Raleigh, from his adjacent seat of Greenway, for the purpose of smoking. A project was recently a-foot for using it as a means for constructing a railway viaduct over the Dart.
