Broadford, a bay, a burn, and a village of Strath parish, Isle of Skye, Inverness-shire. The bay confronts the entrance of Loch Carron; is screened at its month by Pabba island, and has a somewhat triangular outline, measuring 5½ miles wide across the chord, and 1¾ mile thence to its inmost recess. The burn runs 5 miles north-north-eastward to the head of the bay, contains good store of trout, and is frequented by salmon. The village stands at the burn's month, 8¼ miles WSW of Kyle Akin Ferry; and is described by Mr Black in Madcap Violet 'as a little cluster of white houses, with a brilliant show of dahlias and a dark-green line of trees, right behind which rise the great red granite shoulders of Ben-naCailleach. ' At it are a post office, with money order, savings' bank, and telegraph departments, an hotel, the parish church (1841; 900 sittings), a Free church, and a public school, which, with accommodation for 132 children, had (1879) an average attendance of 70, and a grant of £68,19s. Cattle fairs are held on the Thursday after the last Tuesday of May, and the Thursday after the third Tuesday of August, September, and November. See chap. v. of Alex. Smith's Summer in Skye (1866).
