SANCTON, a village, a township, and a parish, in Pocklington district, E. R. Yorkshire. The village stands 2½ miles S E by S of Market-Weighton r. station, and has a post-office under Brough. The township contains also the hamlet of Houghton, and comprises 3, 410 acres. Real property, £3, 194. Pop., 400. Houses, 93. The parish contains also the township of North Cliff, and comprises 4, 708 acres. Pop., 476. Houses, 106. The manor belong to the Hon.Langdale. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York. Value, £49. Patron, J. Broadley, Esq. The church is good, and has a pinnacled tower. There are a Wesleyan chapel and an endowed school with £20 a year.
