Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for ROYSTON and HITCHIN railway

ROYSTON and HITCHIN railway, practically Hitchin and Cambridge railway, a railway in Herts and Cambridgeshire; from a junction with the Great North-ern at Hitchin, east-north-eastward and north-eastward, past Royston and Shepreth, to a junction with the Bedford branch of the Great Eastern, giving access thence to Cambridge. It consists of a main part from the Hitchinjunction to Royston, 12½ miles long, authorized in 1846and opened in 1850, and an extension thence past Shepreth, 5 miles long, authorized in 1848 and opened in 1851; and it cost £3, 500 per mile.
