NOTTINGHAM and LINCOLN railway, a railway in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire. It begins at Long Eaton, on the E border of Derbyshire; has junctions there with a continuation line westward to Derby, and with cross lines southward to Leicester and northward up the Erewash valley; goes north-eastward, past Beeston, Nottingham, Thurgarton, Newark, South Collingham, and Thorpe-on-the-Hill, to Lincoln; sends off a short branch from Fiskerton to Southwell; is crossed at Newark by the Great Northern; and has a total length of 41¾ miles. It constitutes part of the Midland system; it was formed in 1844-6, immediately after that systemwas constituted by the amalgamation of the North Midland, the Midland Counties, and the Birmingham and Derby railway s; and it has acquired new connexions through works subsequently constructed by the Midland company, and noticed in our article Midland railway .
