NIDD (The), a river of W. R. Yorkshire. It rises on Great Whernside mountain, at the boundary with N. R. Yorkshire; and runs south-eastward, past Lofthouse, Pateley-Bridge, Ripley, and Knaresborough, to the river Ouse at Nun-Monekton. Its valley bears the name of Nidderdale; contains much fine scenery; and is traversed, up to Pateley-Bridge, by the Nidd Valley branch of the North eastern railway .
