Coulter, a loch in the S of St Ninians parish, Stirlingshire, near the foot of the Lennox Hills, 6¼ miles SSW of Stirling. With an utmost length and width of 5 and 3 furlongs, it is shallow towards the W, but very deep to the NE; contains perch and pike; and sends off' its superfluence by Auchenhowie Burn to the Carron. During the great earthquake of Lisbon (1735) it was violently agitated, and sank about 10 or 12 feet.Ord. Sur., sh. 31, 1867.
