In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rousham like this:
ROUSHAM, a parish in Woodstock district, Oxford; on the Oxford canal and the river Cherwell, near Heyford r. station, and 5 miles N N E of Woodstock. Post-town, Lower Heyford, under Oxford. Acres, 920. Real property, £1, 573. Pop., 131. Houses, 29. The property belongs to C. Dormer, Esq. ...
R. Park is Mr. D.'s seat. The mansion was built, in the time of James I., by Sir R. Dormer; contains a rich collection of pictures; was visited by Pope and H. Walpole; and stands in grounds laid out by Kent, and containing a number of statues brought from Italy. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford. Value, £240.* Patron,C. Dormer, Esq. The church includes some good late Norman and decorated English portions.
