In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Garstang like this:
Garstang, market town, par., and township (ry. sta. Garstang and Catterall), N. Lancashire, on river Wyre, 10½ miles S. of Lancaster -- par., 29,422 ac. and 4439 foreshore, pop. 6645; township, 503 ac., pop. 783; town, pop. 2769; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Thursday. The neighbourhood contains several very large cotton factories.
