In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ellesmere like this:
Ellesmere, market town and township with ry. sta. N. Shropshire, and par. (partly also in Flintshire), on Ellesmere (Aelsmere) Mere and Canal, 11 miles SW. of Whitchurch by rail -- par., 28,046 ac., pop. 5782; township, 25,922 ac., pop. 5452; town, pop. 1875; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks. Market-day, Tuesday; has malting and tanning. From the bowling green on the site of the old castle parts of 9 counties may be seen.
