In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Sabden like this:
SABDEN, a village in Pendleton township, Whalley parish, Lancashire; under Spence-moor, 3¾ miles E N E of Whalley r. station, and 5¼ N W of Burnley. It has a post-office under Blackburn, the church of Heyhouses, chapels for Baptists and Wesleyans, and a British school; carries on cotton-manufacture and calico printing; and has a pop. of about 1, 440.
