In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Aiskew like this:
AISKEW, or Askew, a township in Bedale parish, N. R.Yorkshire; ¾ mile ENE of Bedale. It contains Little Leeming hamlet, Baptist and Roman Catholic chapels, and an endowed school. Pop., 759. Houses, 164.
