In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Cardigan Island like this:
CARDIGAN ISLE, an island in Cardiganshire; on the right side of the month of the river Teifi, 3¾ miles NNW of Cardigan. It measures about 40 acres; and is pastured by sheep.
