In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Pewsham like this:
PEWSHAM, an extra-parochial tract in Chippenham district, Wilts; 1½ mile S E by S of Chippenham. Real property, £2, 772. Pop., 462. Houses, 95. The ancient royal forest of P. extended from Chippenham to Devizes.
