In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Aller like this:
ALLER, a village and a parish in Langport district, Somerset. The village stands near the river Parret and the Durston and Yeovil railway, 2½ miles N of Langport; and has a post office under Taunton. This is said to be the place where Guthrum and his Danes were baptized after their defeat by Alfred at Edington. ...
The parish includes also the tything of Cath. Acres, 3,651. Real property, £6,454. Pop., 518. Houses, 115. The property is much subdivided. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells. Value, £623.* Patron, Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The church was restored in 1861. There are an Independent chapel, a national school, and charities £8. Dr. Ralph Cudworth, the author of the "Intellectual System of the Uuiverse," was a native; and his father was rector. A detachment of Goring's army was defeated, in 1645, on Aller Moor.
