In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Great Hatfield like this:
HATFIELD (Great), a township in Mappleton and Sigglesthorne parishes, E. R. Yorkshire; on the Hull and Hornsea railway, at Hatfield station, 3½ miles SSW of Hornsea. Acres of the M. section, 507; of the S. section, 939. Real property of the whole, £1, 750. Pop. of the M. section, 121; of the S. section, 50. Houses, 23 and 8. The manor belongs to Lord Westbury; and the manor house is occupied by a farmer. An ancient wayside cross is here, 9 feet high, of beautiful workmanship, with couching lions at the base.
