In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Upper Mill like this:
Upper Mill, small town, Saddleworth township, Rochdale par., S. div. West-Riding Yorkshire, 4½ miles E. of Oldham, 135 ac., pop. 1384; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank.
