In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Muchelney like this:
MUCHELNEY, a village and a parish in Langport district, Somerset. The village stands on the river Parret, 1¾ mile S S E of Langport r. station. The parish contains also the hamlets of Muchelney-Ham and Thorney. Post-town, Langport, Somerset. Acres, 1, 566. Real property, £4, 391. Pop., 308. ...
Houses, 53. The property is divided among a few. The manor and much of the land belong to W. Long, Esq. A Benedictineabbey was founded here, in 939, by King Athelstan; had, at the dissolution, an income estimated at £499; and has left some remains, which are now used as a farm-house. The living is a p. curacy in the diocese of Bath and Wells. Value, £95. Patron, W. Long, Esq. The church is later English, in good condition; and consists of nave, aisles, transept, and chancel, with a tower.
