In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Selworthy like this:
SELWORTHY, a village and a parish in Williton parish, Somerset. The village stands in a deep dell among hills, 1½ mile from the coast, 3½ W of Minehead, and 10½ W by N of Watchet r. station; and is a picturesque place. The parish contains also six hamlets, Blackford manor, and Allerford tything; the last of which has a post-office under Taunton. ...
Acres, 2, 219. Rated property, £1, 888. Pop., 437. Houses, 92. The property is subdivided. The manor, with Holnicote House, belongs to Sir T. D. Acland, Bart. H. Housewas twice destroyed by fire, and was recently rebuilt. An ancient camp, called Bury Castle, crowns a hill over-looking the village. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells. Value, £291.* Patron, Sir T. D. Acland, Bart. The church is later English. The churchyard contains an ancient stone cross.
