In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Lotherton like this:
LOTHERTON-CUM-ABERFORD, a township, with a village, in Sherburn parish, W. R. Yorkshire; 5 miles S of Tadcaster. Acres, 1,052. Real property, £1,873. Pop., 547. Houses, 113. The manor, with Lotherton Hall, belongs to Lord Ashtown. There is a chapel of ease, an ancient structure, consisting of nave and chancel, with a belfry.
