In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Scothern like this:
SCOTHERN, a parish, with a village, in the district and county of Lincoln; 1¾ mile W by N of Langworth r. station, and 5 N E of Lincoln. It has a post-office under Lincoln. Acres, 2, 500. Real property, £4, 221. Pop., 579. Houses, 143. The property is divided among a few. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln. Value, £102. Patron, the Earl of Scarborough. The church is good; and there are a Wesleyan chapel, and charities £16.
