In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newby like this:
NEWBY-WITH-MULWITH, a township in Ripon parish, W. R. Yorkshire; on the river Ure, 3 miles S Eby S of Ripon. Acres, 700. Real property, £1, 512. Pop., 60. Houses, 13. Newby Hall here belonged formerly to the Weddels and the Robinsons; was built in 1705, by Sir Edward Blacket, after designs by Sir Christopher Wren; belongs now to the Earl of Ripon; and contains a drawing-room 40 feet by 26 hung with Gobeline tapestry, a fine gallery of marbles, busts, and articles of vertu, and a collection of portraits and pictures by Reynolds and other masters.
