In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Orgreave like this:
ORGREAVE, a township in Rotherham parish, W. R. Yorkshire; on the river Rother, adjacent to the York and Derby railway, 3½ miles S by W of Rotherham. Acres, 510. Pop., 72. Houses, 14. There is an extensive colliery.
